The following posting was originally put together in December 2009. Long forgotten is the source of inspiration for the signs. However, re-reading is a good thing not matter the status of your church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
15 Signs That A Church Is In Trouble<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n #1 \u2013 When excuses are made about the way things are instead of embracing a willingness to roll up the sleeves and fix the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n [15] When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, \u201cBlessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.\u201d [16] Jesus replied: \u201cA certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. [17] At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, \u2018Come, for everything is now ready.\u2019 [18] \u201cBut they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, \u2018I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.\u2019 [19] \u201cAnother said, \u2018I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.\u2019 [20] \u201cStill another said, \u2018I just got married, so I can’t come.\u2019 [21] \u201cThe servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, \u2018Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.\u2019 [22] \u201c\u2018Sir,\u2019 the servant said, \u2018what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.\u2019 [23] \u201cThen the master told his servant, \u2018Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full. [24] I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n #2 \u2013 When the church becomes content with merely receiving people that come rather than actually going out and finding them\u2026in other words, they lose their passion for evangelism!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Luke 14:12-14<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n [12] Then Jesus said to his host, \u201cWhen you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. [13] But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, [14] and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n #3 \u2013 The focus of the church is to build a great church (complete with the pastors picture\u2026and his wife\u2019s\u2026on everything) and not the Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I Corinthians 1:11-17<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n [11] My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. [12] What I mean is this: One of you says, \u201cI follow Paul\u201d; another, \u201cI follow Apollos\u201d; another, \u201cI follow Cephas \u2019\u201d;] still another, \u201cI follow Christ.\u201d [13] Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? [14] I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, [15] so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. [16] (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) [17] For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel\u2014not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n #4 \u2013 The leadership begins to settle for the natural rather than rely on the supernatural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jude 17-22<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n [17] But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. [18] They said to you, \u201cIn the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.\u201d [19] These are the men who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit. [20] But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. [21] Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. [22] Be merciful to those who doubt; [23] snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear\u2014hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Side note: Romans 9:6-8<\/u><\/strong> [6] It is not as though God’s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. [7] Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, \u201cIt is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.\u201d *[[8] In other words, it is not the natural children who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n #5 \u2013 The church begins to view success\/failure in regards to how they are viewed in the church world rather than whether or not they are actually fulfilling the Great Commission!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Church leaders compare their buildings, budgets, and number of attendees to show how successful their church is.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n #6 \u2013 The leaders within the church cease to be coachable. {Or, cease to follow the Holy Spirit}<\/p>\n\n\n\n Acts 9:17-22<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n [17] Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, \u201cBrother Saul, the Lord\u2014Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here\u2014has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.\u201d [18] Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, [19] and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus<\/u><\/strong>. [20] At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. [21] All those who heard him were astonished and asked, \u201cIsn’t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?\u201d [22] Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Side note: Mark 13:10-11<\/u> <\/strong>[10] And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. [11] Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n #8 \u2013 Scripture isn\u2019t central in every decision that is made!<\/p>\n\n\n\n II Timothy 3:16-17<\/u><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n [16] All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, [17] so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n #9 \u2013 The church is reactive rather than proactive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This statement is basically a rewording of the first two statements.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n #10 \u2013 The people in the church lose sight of the next generation and refuse to fund ministry simply because they don\u2019t understand \u201cthose young people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n (NIV) Proverbs 22:6<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n or<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n (YLT) Proverbs 22:6<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Give instruction to a youth about his way, Even when he is old he turneth not from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ephesians 6:4<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n #11 \u2013 The goal of the church is to simply maintain the way things are\u2026to NOT rock the boat and\/or upset anyone\u2026especially the big givers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Matthew 21:12-16<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n [12] Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. [13] \u201cIt is written,\u201d he said to them, \u201c\u2018My house will be called a house of prayer,\u2019 [but you are making it a \u2018den of robbers. \u2019\u201d] [14] The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. [15] But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, \u201cHosanna to the Son of David,\u201d they were indignant. [16] \u201cDo you hear what these children are saying?\u201d they asked him. \u201cYes,\u201d replied Jesus, \u201chave you never read, \u201c\u2018From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n #12 \u2013 The church is no longer willing to take steps of faith because \u201cthere is just too much to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Matthew 25:14ff <\/strong>– Parable of the talents<\/p>\n\n\n\n #13 \u2013 The church simply does not care about the obvious and immediate needs that exist in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n More worried about the next program than the need next door!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Ephesians 4:29<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, * but only what is helpful for building others up * according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n James 2:14-17<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n [14] What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? [15] Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. [16] If one of you says to him, \u201cGo, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,\u201d but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? [17] In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n #14 \u2013 The people learn how to depend on one man to minister to everyone rather than everyone embracing their role in the body, thus allowing the body to care for itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Romans 12:6-8<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n [6] We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. [7] If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; [8] if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n #15 \u2013 When the leaders\/staff refuse to go the extra mile in leading and serving because of how \u201cinconvenient\u201d doing so would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mathew 5:41-42<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n [41] If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. [42] Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n #7 \u2013 There is a loss of a sense of urgency! (Hell is no longer hot, sin is no longer wrong and the cross is no longer important!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hell is still hot, sin is still wrong, and the cross is still important!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hell is as hot as the day God created it, sin is as wrong as the day Adam and Eve bit the fruit, and the cross is as important as the day Jesus was crucified!<\/p>\n\n\n\n So why don’t we have the sense of urgency?<\/p>\n\n\n\n We have taken our eyes off the prize!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Luke 14:15-24<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
